Laser Initiation System for Solid Rocket Motor Ignition

This paper describes the development of a practical laser initiation system for solid rocket motor ignition. The system adopts redundant firing units design, comprising laser diode firing unit, fiber optical assemblies, laser initiated detonators, flexible confined detonating cord assemblies, through-bulkhead initiators and a direct current converter. The experiments, including single ignition and solid rocket ignition test results indicate that this system has the complete ability to ignite solid rocket motor, and will be also used in other ordnance system such as self-destruction device of solid rocket motor.
