A Thermodynamic Study on Solubility of Dimethyl Aminoethylchloride Hydrochloride and Sodium Azide in Water for Production of DMAZ

Dimethyl amino ethyl azide (DMAZ) is a good replacement for hydrazine group in space programs. Dimethyl amino ethyl chloride hydrochloride (DMAEC.HCl) and sodium azide are reactants for production of DMAZ. Both of them are toxic and therefore they are transported and handled in solid states. Practically, an aqueous form of them is used in DMAZ production line. Due to low solubility of DMAZ in water, it is tried to use less amount of water to avoid of subsequent cost of separation. Conclusively, the minimum amount of water to dissolve them is saturated value. Also heat of solution should be determined for better design of equipments. In this article, by a thermodynamic study, solubility of both reactants with respect to temperature was measured for the first time. Dissolution of them is endothermic; so that heat of solution was calculated for DMAEC.HCl and sodium azide as+12.24 kJ/mol and 7.32 kJ/mol, respectively.
