Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Study of Laser-induced Dissociation of Hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazine
Dissociation process of hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazine(RDX) has been studied at 532nm laser by time of flight mass spectrometer(TOFMS). The mass spectra of both positive and negative ions were obtained. Major peaks were assigned to direct fragments from RDX. According to the possible distribution of the decomposition products, three possible decomposition paths of RDX were proposed. Firstly, two C-N bonds of the parent molecule broke to generate (CH2)2N-NO2 and H2C(N-NO2)2,then these two fragments split to smaller products such as NO2, NCH2N, CH2N-NO2 and N-NO2. Secondly, the concerted triple dissociation of the RDX to form CH2N-NO2.Thirdly, a successive loss of the nitrogroups happened in the initial step, ions such as (CH2)3(N-NO2)2N, (CH2)3N(N-NO2)N and (H2CN)3 were detected, and then , cracking of C-N bonds of the ring occurred to produce smaller fragments such as N(CH2)N and (CH2)2N. The mass spectrum indicated that, the expungement of NO2 dominated the decomposition path of the initial step, but as the increasing of the laser energy, the formation of H2C(N-NO2)2 became obvious. That means the competing reactions of N-N and C-N bond occurred in the decomposition of RDX when it was irradiated by 532 nm laser.
