Chemical composition and pulmonary toxicologic characterization of summertime traffic-related particles in Beijing, China

To what extent physicochemical properties of particles from different sources influence their inflammatory potential has not been fully clarified, the aim of this study was to determined ambient participate matter(PM) toxicity in relation to chemical composition and traffic intensity. Comparisons between concentration of element and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) , size effect, and the pulmonary toxicity of rats in urban road dust of Beijing, China, were carried out. The results of chemical analysis shows that the concentration of PAHs in PM10 and PM2.5of Near-traffic source was much higher than that of Far-traffic source, the concentrations of PM element have the same trend. Moreover, fine particles have stronger adsorption capacity to enrich metals than coarse particles. Meanwhile , the detection of biochemical parameters and inflammation cytokine showed that the trafficrelated PM can cause oxidative damage to organism, i. e. the antioxidant capacity changed and lipid peroxidation products increased. Together, these data illustrate that the particles of the near-traffic area had certain pollution at summer in Beijing.
