Propoxur Induced Immuntoxicity on Balb/c Mice

Propoxur is a widely used carbamate insecticide applied mainly for pest control in households in many countries. In order to evaluate the immnotoxicity of propoxur mice were exposed to propoxur at the dose of 0.7-10 mg/kg for 30 days. At the end of experiment the body weights of mice were measured, and the immune system damage were evaluated through spleen and thymus weight, killing ability of natural killer cell, plaque forming cell assay (PFC) , serum hemolysin detection, T lymphocyte proliferation and delayed-type-hypersensitivity (DTH). The result showed that propoxur could decreased the thymus organ index and PFC at the dose of 5.0 mg/kg. It also inhibited the T lymphocyte proliferation and NK cell killing activity at 2.5 mg/kg. Especially for spleen organ index, it was influenced by propoxur at the dose of 1.3 mg/kg. The DTH of mice was not influenced by propoxur at the dose of 10 mg/kg. Based on these information it was drawn that propoxur had adverse effect on immune system. Both innate immune system and adaptive immune system were influenced while mice exposed to propoxur for one month.
