Phase Transition and 2D-3D Morphological Change of Aromatic Schiff Base Derivatives in Organized Molecular Films

A novel aromatic Schiff base ligand has been designed and the properties of interfacial phase behaviors and the coordination with Cu(Ⅱ) ions were investigated in comparison with that of the ex situ synthesized Cu(Ⅱ)-complex on pure water surface. It has been found that both the ligand and the corresponding complex can form stable monolayer or multilayer films at the air/water interface, which could be transferred onto solid substrates to construct Langmuir-Blodgett films. In addition, it is interesting to note that there existed a novel phase transition process when the ligand was spread on pure water surface. At the same time, the 2D-3D morphological change from plain film to fiber-like nano-architectures was realized subsequently after the phase transition point. However, the case is different for the films deposited from Cu(Ⅱ) ions subphase. It was suggested that the distinct difference for both types of Langmuir film was developed mainly due to the change of molecular conformation and/or the hydrophobic capability in the process of supramolecular assembly at the air/water interface. This work would present a helpful clue for the fabrication of novel organized film through simply controlling and regulating the substituted groups in the amphiphiles. Moreover, a series of methods, such as surface pressure-area isotherms, UV-vis and FT-IR spectra, and AFM measurement, have been used to characterize the deposited monolayer and multilayer films in detail in comparison with the results of molecular simulation.
