Integrating electro-optic device with controllable liquid crystal alignment in fused silica using a femtosecond laser

We demonstrate well-aligned liquid crystal (LC) micro-cells embedded in fused silica fabricated by femtosecond laser microfabrication. The femtosecond-laser-induced nanoripples on the sidewalls of the micro-cell enable homogeneous alignment of LC molecules with different azimuthal angles. Combined with embedded microelectrodes and optical waveguides, integrated LC electro-optic (EO) modulation can be achieved in a glass chip using a femtosecond laser.
