Size-dependent Mechanical Properties of Nano-cellular Materials
Size-dependent elastic properties of nano-sized honeycombs and open-celled foams are presented in this paper. The results show that both the mechanical properties and the volume of a nano-sized honeycomb or open-celled foam can be controlled to vary over a very large range by adjusting the amplitude of an applied electric potential. It is also found that the controllable ranges of the elastic properties and the volume of a nano-cellular material depend greatly on the Poisson ratio of the solid material from which the cellular material is made.
