Automated Grasping in Manipulation of Individual Paper Fibers
Fibers, both natural and synthetic, are utilized in a broad spectrum of materials and applications. An interesting example is a wood fiber which is the main component of pulp and paper. Despite the central role of fibers, their research still has many shortcomings. Currently, the main drawback in fiber research is the lack of suitable measurement data concerning especially fiber-fiber bonds and fiber networks but also the characteristics of individual fibers. This paper focuses on automating fiber grasping which is one of the essential functions required in fiber manipulation. Image based measurements are used to identify a fiber suitable for grasping and characterizing.
