Optical Positioning Control of a 3D Micromanipulator

Here we present a developed mechatronic micromanipulator named mechatronic handling device (MHD) with 3 degrees of freedom (DoF) operating on a micro-and nanolevel together with a digital optical system for visual investigation and control of its functionality. The realized optical set-up consists of a micro-objective, high resolution digital camera and precise translational stage with integrated positioning sensors. Specially developed image processing algorithms measure the MHD micro-displacements in the image space and provide the vision control option. The translational stage is used to calibrate the image space. The working space and maximal range of motion of each piezo-ceramic actuation module are experimentally investigated and the obtained results are presented.
