Application of acoustic emission to assess the damage in reinforced concrete structures subjected to seismic loading

This work presents the results and preliminary analysis of the Acoustic Emission (AE) as recorded during a shaking table tests carried out at the University of Granada. A reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure was subjected to earthquake-type dynamic loading on a shake table up to collapse. The peak acceleration applied to the shaking table was increased in four consecutive seismic simulations. The frame structure was designed by applying the strong column-weak beam concept and capacity considerations. The evolution of damage was monitored in terms of AE energy recorded by low frequency sensors. Moreover, a good correlation between the macrocracks and the AE source locations after each seismic simulation was observed.
