Synthesis and properties of the waterborne polyurethane modified with the hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene

The resistance of normal waterborne polyurethane coatings for water and solvent would be lower than the solvent-based polyurethane. In order to improve the resistance for water and solvent, it was investigated that a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) were modified by hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), and the influence of content of HTPB and -COOH (COOH wt%=1.5%, HTPB wt%≤35%) on WPU stability and diameter were studied. It was more steady that the content of carboxyl groups is 1.5 wt% or higher than 1.5 wt% and the content of HTPB is lower than 35 wt%. The waterborne polyurethane structure would be studied by ATR, IR and TEM, and the improvement mechanism of its resistance for water and solvent and its mechanical properties was discussed in this paper. It were found that carboxylate and carbamate segments as the strong hydrophilic segment in the films of WPU are excluded from the surface the films of WPU, and the hydrophobic surface properties of the films of WPU were improved, and some mechanical properties were preserved or improved to some extent.
