Formation and structures study of PHBV/chitosan composite ultrafine fibers prepared by emulsion electrospinning
PHBV and chitosan are two natural materials of biocompatibility and renewability. However, they cannot be prepared by electrospinning simultaneously, because they have no co-solvent. In this work, chitosan/H2O/acetic acid solution (W) was dispersed in PHBV/CHCl3 (O) with the assistance of surfactant span 80 to form W/O emulsions. The emulsions were then electrospun into fibers. The morphologies of the ultrafine fibers were observed by scanning electron microscope and fluorescence microscope. The phase inversion was measured by conductivity meter. The result showed that the emulsions with W:O ratio less than 4:6 had good spinnability. While the emulsion could not be electrospun into fibers if the ratio was higher than 5:5, because phase inversion occurred at that ratio, and the chitosan solution had no spinnability. The fibers from W/O emulsions showed larger diameters than that from PHBV/CHCl3.Chitosan dispersed at the axis part of the composite fibers. The dispersed phase was stretched from sphere to strip in the electrospinning process.
