Conducting thin layers and polymer particles

The stability of metal/polymer interfaces is frequently determined by electrochemical reactions. For ion-permeable coatings a diffuse double layer is formed at the interface and all electrochemical reactions including corrosion reactions are slowed down considerably. We have developed a new release system for corrosion protection on the basis of polypyrrole interface between the metal and an organic coating system. It will be shown that ultrathin self-assembled layers of bifunctional alkyl-spacered phosphonic acids on metal oxide surfaces can affect adhesion promotion and corrosion inhibition. The preparation of organic/inorganic hybrid nanoparticles will be discussed. Polymeric particles with defined properties (size, morphology, reactive surface etc.) can be used as templates for the deposition of inorganic materials in nanoparticle form. These functionalities are often responsible for the interaction strength between polymer chains and inorganic particles and orientation of the inorganic material on the nanometer scale. The sub-micrometer large latex particles (based on copolymers of styrene and different acrylates) and microgels (based on copolymers of vinylcaprolactam and different acrylates) and their functionalization with noble metals (Au, Ag) and semiconductors (conjugated polymers, like polypyrrol, polyoxythiophene) can be used as building blocks for the preparation of functional materials in form of fibers, patterned layers, thin films, hydrogels, etc.
