Solution self-assembly behavior of perylene diimide containing C60 and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes side chain

Perylene Diimide (PDI), Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) and C60 have found a wide variety of applications in optoelectronic devices. In this contribution, a novel Perylene bisimide dye covalently joined to C60 and POSS through flexible propyl connection (C60-PDI-POSS) has been synthesized. The solution self-assembled C60-PDI-POSS is asymmetric in geometry and soluble in common organic solvents. By use of UV/Vis spectrum and steady-state fluorescence spectrum measurement, the self-assembly of this compound in different solvent having different polarity has been discussed. Aggregation has been observed on UV spectra from low concentration to high concentration in chloroform. Temperature-dependent spectrum of PDI-C60 in Xylene was also studied. The UV spectra shows a slight red shift when temperature was decreased from 90 to 10℃. All these features may indicate presence of J-type aggregation happening in POSS-PDI-C60. In addition, the fluorescence of C60-PDI-POSS has been strongly quenched compared to that of pure perylene under the same concentration. This novel material design may find good application in photoelectric devices.
