Displacement Control -the Future of Fluid Power Systems

This paper discusses the application of displacement controlled (DC) linear and rotary drives in mobile machines. The circuit proposed by Rahmfeld and Ivantysynova (1998) has been implemented in several prototype machines since its first publications. The paper summarizes the efforts of the authors research group in introducing displacement controlled actuators to mobile machinery and obtaining the required market acceptance. The paper reports fuel savings and performance improvements measured on the fifth prototype machine recently. Comprehensive simulation models have been developed and applied to study machine performance, power distribution and energy consumption of various machines. Developed actuator and machine control concepts will be briefly discussed. The last chapter discusses the need as well as proposed ways for efficiency improvements of positive displacement pumps and motors, which form the main source of power losses in DC systems.
