The Magnetic Field Simulation and Optimization of Magnetorheological Fluid Transmission Device

The magnetorheological fluid (MRF) transmission device the paper deals with is mainly used to transfer torque and regulate speed steplessly by changing the viscosity of the MRF. Theoretical models are built to explain the relationship between the main parameter of the device and the transmitting torque, which can analyze the performance of the device. The implementation of the model is based on finite element method, and the results include magnetic flux intensity produced by electric field and the shear stress of MRF which is caused by magnetic field to provide the transmitting torque. After obtaining initial analytic results, an optimization which uses the subproblem approximation method is carried out to obtain an optimum design, one with high transmitting torque, low weight and small size.
