Mechanism of a Biosonars Indirect Target Locating Ability

It is proven that biosonar plays an important roll in no-light navigation environment. Recent biological research results indicate that a fishing bat can even detect underwater fishes with biosonar system. And a dolphin can even find and dig out fish buried under sea bottom. This work is to study their mechanism with an artificial biosonar system. A specially designed biosonar system is utilized in the research to explore the mechanism of biosonar underwater target locating. Experimental results indicate that this biosonar system should sense from the above several times from different positions to locate a moving target like fish. It explains why a fishing bat must send a series of continuous chirps before it can finally locate the target. Small waves from wind generate noises in echolocation, but in a steady wave there is still some echolocation difference between reflections from water surfaces with and without fish under them.
