An Asymptotic Analysis of the Contact Stresses at the Axle/hub press Fit Joint
An empirical equation to predict the contact stresses is established based on an asymptotic approach taking into account the constant stress terms caused by the interference fit. At first, the eigen-solutions of singular stress fields at the axle/hub interface edge are analyzed by a one-dimensional finite element method. Secondly, the relation between the magnitude of interference and the assembly temperature is calculated by the finite element method, thus the constant stress terms can be expresses with respect to the magnitude of interference. Thirdly, the stress intensity factors at the axle/hub interface edge are solved from a simultaneous equation of the tangential and shear stress near the interface edge. Finally, the expression of the contact stresses versus the magnitude of interference is given by superposition of the singular stress term and the constant stress term.
