Indentation Behavior of Sandwich Structures with Metallic Foam Core
Sandwich structures with metallic foam core are sensitive to damage when subjected to local indentation due to the low strength of the core and low bending stiffness of the thin face sheets. The indentation behavior is susceptible to a larger deflection, and it is of great importance to obtain concise solutions of plastic response. In the paper, indentation response of sandwich circular panels with metallic foam core, on a rigid base, dented by a spherical indenter, is analyzed based on the principle of virtual velocities. To simplify the analytical model, a linear velocity field as well as a displacement field in power series form was suggested. The analytical solutions indicate that the indentation force increases linearly with indentation displacement, and the displacement field of deformation region is distributed according to a twoorder polynomial. A FEA model was established using the ABAQUS code to verify the validity and applicability of the analytical solutions. The results from the two different ways are in close agreement.
