Infrared Thermograthy Study of Defect Induced Temperature Evolution in Submicrocrystalline Metals
The work is devoted to experimental study of the effect of grain size on the mechanical properties andenergy dissipation in metals under dynamic compression. Titanium Grade 2 specimens with differentgrain size (30μm and 0.3 μm) and A17075 specimens (2μm and 0.2μm) were tested under dynamiccompression in split Hopkinson bar. To investigate the thermodynamics of deformation process theordinary experimental techniques were coupled with the infrared scanning equipments. The specimensurface temperature was measured with frequency up to 4 KHz by infra-red camera CEDIP Silver450M. It has been shown, that the process of grain crushing slightly improves the mechanicalcharacteristics of the materials under dynamic deformation (about 25%), but leads to a qualitativechange of the character of energy absorption in these materials.
