Numerical Simulation and Experimental Research of Influence of Structure on PELE
PELE, which is short for Penetrator with Enhanced Lateral Effect, converts axial velocity into lateral velocity. Influence of the structure on PELE is researched in this paper. By changing the ratio of inner to outer diameter (I/O), simulations and experiments on PELE penetrating homogeneous armour steel target are completed. The three-dimensional finite element code LS-DYNA is used for the simulation. The experimental results coincide with the numerical simulations very well. Based on the results of simulations and experiments, we can find that the lateral effect of PELE is better as the I/O increases, there is an optimum ratio of length to outer diameter (L/D) matched up with the I/O. The results obtained provide some reference for projectiles design.
