Numerical Simulation and Performance Analysis of Operation Process of Valveless Pulsejet Engine

Due to its attractive characteristics, the pulsejet may be an promising low-cost micro-propulsion system. Although a considerable amount of work has been done on developing different types of valveless pulsejets, understanding of the operation mechanism of these jets is still very limited. Numerical simulations are performed utilizing CFX to model the 3-D compressible viscous flow in a 540mm overall length valveless pulsejet, and predicting the performance. Simulation results provide detailed physical insight into the pulsejet cycle and correspond with the theory; the error of operation frequency between numerical simulation and the acoustic theoretic model is less than 10%. These confirm the correctness and reliability of the presented numerical model. The conclusions offer academic basis for analyzing the operation process and performance of such engine, and may be useful to designing, experiment, predicting the performance and optimization method.
