Research on Compliant and Passive-active Technology for Knee Joint Rehabilitation Training

Now continuous passive motion (CPM) is the main rehabilitation training method for injured knee joint. But it has some obvious disadvantages. For example, CPM appliance is composed of electric motor and rigid members, which is easy to hurt the injured knee joint again if the regulation of the force or angle is incorrect. On the other hand, CPM appliance can usually provide passive rehabilitation training only. In this paper, a new type of rehabilitation appliance for knee joint is developed. The features of the developed rehabilitation appliance are compliance and the realization of passive-active rehabilitation training. The complex actuating technology which made of rod-less pneumatic cylinder and pneumatic compliant actuator is proposed. The pneumatic compliant actuator can realize thrust force and long stroke output. For the tested pneumatic compliant prototype actuator, the deformation rate is up to 120% and thrust force is 320N. Experimental results for developed rehabilitation appliance show that the rehabilitation appliance has good compliance for passive training, which can make the necessary concessions when the training angle or the training force exceeds the allowable limits of the injured knee joint. The angular velocity of the end stroke driven by pneumatic compliant actuator can be controlled in 0.3°/s and the maximum angle can be 10°. The step-less resistance force and angle of the training regulations are realized for active training.
