Analysis of the Folk Art Features in Traditional Chinese Animation Design
Modeling design plays a very important role in animation films. Only the appropriate modeling image could reveal the essence of an animation film and be recognized by the audiences, such as the animation characters in Disney Movies, the Chinese cartoon Gourd Doll, Black Sergeant, Avanti etc. Throughout the development of Chinese animation films, from Princess of Iron Fan of early age to todays Radiant Sheep and the Wolf , Zheng He, etc., the method of modeling production material and technique selection have been gradually changed from Chinese traditional folk art to the latest 3D application software. Their advantages and disadvantages depend on the view of person. In my view, the brilliance of Chinese animation movies should be attributed to those early films assimilating Chinese traditional art features, such as the first long sound animation film Princess of Iron Fan, the first puppet animation the Emperor Dream, and later Monkey Creating Havoc in Heaven, Ne Zha Conquering the Dragon King, MuDi, Laoshan Taoist films, which are enjoyed widespread reputation at home and abroad. Many movies are still classical even at present. Judging from their modeling design features, they all acquire inspiration from Chinese tradition art such as the Dunhuang murals, ink painting, paper cutting, puppet shows, etc. Therefore, Chinese traditional folk art has exerted an enlightening effect on the modeling design of animation movies.
