Blasting Performance Evaluation vis-a-vis Energy Factor Based Selection of Explosives in Surface Mines
Blasting continues to be a major operation in any surface mining operations. The success of blasting primarily depend on the blast design parameters, explosive selection procedure, blast execution methodology and performance evaluation. Over all these years a number of approaches for explosive selection and performance evaluation have been developed and followed. In the areas of performance evaluation, role of IT based computer packages is also quite significant Since performance evaluation is largely dependent on the major input like explosives, several researchers globally have studied these aspects on case to case basis. An attempt has been made in this paper to highlight the role of explosive energy content, energy factor and sitespecific evaluation mechanism. Energy factor being an innovative approach having combined explosive energy and quality with bench blast parameters, the authors have dealt in depth this sole criteria, to evaluate the blasts. The blasting performance matrix, blasting performance index on the basis of field/operational requirements have been developed and successfully adopted in a large number of Indian surface mines.
