Experiences from Australia for Chinas remote western regions
Rangelands in Australia and China are similar in some ways even though they are very different in other ways. In both countries rangeland regions are vast with climates that are very variable and often also arid and that require people to have a suite of risk management strategies. They are sparsely populated regions compared to other parts of each nation, although Chinese rangelands have a significantly higher human populations than Australia; and they are remote from major markets and political centres. In addition, in both countries, many residents of these regions are minority peoples with distinctive cultures; livestock grazing on natural pastures is the most extensive land use; and mining is significant economically.
