Payment to ecosystem services: a market-oriented mechanism for rangeland ecological compensation in Tibetan Plateau
Introduction: The Tibetan Plateau is one of the most important ecosystems in both China and the world, where rangelands cover a vast area of 112.96 million hectares, accounting for nearly half of the total area. Although sparsely populated and contributing little to Chinas overall economy, rangeland ecosystems of the Tibetan Plateau provide a wide range of environmental services that benefit society as a whole. These services, nevertheless, are often lost because of the lack of financial incentives to preserve them. Therefore there is an need for development of appropriate Ecological Compensation Mechanisms (ECM) in order to encourage land users to adopt environmentally sustainable practices of land use and management.
