Do Knowledge Integration Mechanisms Really Improve Product Innovativeness?

In recent years, knowledge integration mechanisms increasingly have been considered a key predictor of product innovation, yet some central issues related to them remain ambiguous. This study contents that knowledge integration mechanisms have dual effects on product innovativeness, but eventually they may fall into familiarity trap. Thus, the curvilinear relationship between the knowledge integration mechanisms and product innovativeness is considered and may depend on environmental contexts. Findings suggest under a high level of market turbulence and competitive intensity, the relationship between knowledge integration mechanisms and product innovativeness is a U-shaped relationship. Conversely, under a low level of market turbulence and competitive intensity, the relationship between knowledge integration mechanisms and product innovativeness is an invert U-shaped relationship.
