ENTREPRENEURIAL AND ROUTINIZED LEADERSHIP:LEADING EXPLORATION AND EXPLOITATION IN THE AMBIDEXTROUS ORGANIZATION
It is not uncommon for managers to be faced with conflicting demands: to exercise entrepreneurial, innovation-focused leadership outside their home departments and more routinized, process-focused leadership inside. These help their organizations to be both exploratory and exploitative. The data from this study show a number of significant differences associated with these different leadership challenges; including the amount of improvisation involved, the degree of task uncertainty and complexity; and the amount of time that must be spent developing and communicating vision, legitimizing, and networking. Implications for management practice and theory are drawn.
