Examining the relationship between existential insecurity and Internet com-pulsive buying
Previous research suggests that compulsive buying may be some kind of compensa-tion for negative events, insecurity, stress, disappointment, frustration, or lack of self-esteem. Following this approach, and using Terror Management Theory, the present study examines one of the potential antecedents of compulsive buying — existential inse-curity. In addition, the study seeks to fill a literature gap by examining compulsive buying on the Internet, which is burgeoning in recent years. We tested the premise using a sam-ple of 143 undergraduate students. The results suggest a positive association between in-security and compulsive buying on the Internet and illustrate the mediating effect of ma-terialism.
