Acoustic Machine and AUV Assessment of the Debris Flow Disaster in the Wase Coral Reef in the Sumiyo Bay Aid in the Recovery of the Regional Economy

AUVs are used in the investigation of thermal deposits and pipelines in the deep sea, and the Arctic Ocean under the ice sheet. However, investigations due to disasters along the coast are not reported. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the effectiveness of acoustic machines and an AUV investigation in studying a mudflow disaster on a coral reef. The disaster in the vicinity of Amami-oshima Island greatly affected the regional economy that depends on tourism, especially diving. However, our study three weeks after the disaster clarified that the damage to the coral reef was limited based on photographic, side scanning image, and water measurement data. The Mayor of Amami City formally delivered the news of the recovery of the diving spot based on our scientific evidence to the mass media, and the regional economy recovered after this news was reported in the major newspapers.
