Photocatalytic Degradation of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) with β-Ga2O3at Reductive Atmosphere

Photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with wide bandgap β-Ga2O3 at reductive atmosphere was studied. β-Ga2O3 was first prepared and characterized by XRD, TEM and UV-vis diffuse reflection techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of PFOA was carried out in the presence of thiosulfate (S2O3 2-) and N2 bubbling and results displayed that decomposition was 98% and defluorination was 32% after 3 h, when used UV light (λ=254 nm) power was 15 W, dosage of S2O3 2- and β-Ga2O3 was 50 μM and 0.5 g/L, respectively. Degradation abided by pseudo first-order kinetics and kinetics constant (k) was 0.024 min-1 and half life (t1/2) was 28.88 min. Produced intermediates were detected by LC-MS and spectrum revealed that PFOA was attacked by photoinduced electrons and shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (CnF2n+1COOH, 1≤n≤6) and fluoride ion were the major products in aqueous solution.
