Mildew Resistance Treatment of Glass Cotton by Surface Modification

A antibacterial glass cotton(called as AG18) was prepared by a simple processing method to linking a quaternary ammonium compounds, dimethyl octadecyl 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl ammonium chloride (TPOAC), on its surface. At the standard test conditions (initial cell number: 10-5 CFU·ml-1,temperature: 30 , pH: 7.0, contact period: 30 min), the antimicrobial characteristics of AG18 against Escherichia coli IFO 3 ℃ 301 or Staphylococcus aureus IFO 12732 were then investigated. TPOAC to be immobilized has apparent antibacterial activity, and exhibited wide antibacterial spectra against six strains of gram-negative and five strains of gram-positive bacteria, respectively. Its antibacterial activity was hardly influenced by environmental pH but was significantly affected by temperature. A concomitant, peptone, had a distinct effect on the antibacterial activity of AG18.
