Monitoring of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Pollution in Surface Waters of Tunisian Coasts (Mediterranean Sea)

The Mediterranean is known as being one of the zones where we found an important maritime traffic related to the industrial and tourist activity. Tunisian coasts have important sea traffic, and receive high inputs of anthropogenic matter. We investigated the composition and spatial distribution of non-aromatic, aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) found in seawater from different sites in the coastal areas of Tunisia. Water samples were analysed for hydrocarbons by gas chromatography. Results show that some sites were found to be chronically contaminated by total petroleum hydrocarbons based on geochemical biomarkers. In the sites under investigation, petroleum sources may be related to industrial discharge, harbour activities, fishing industries, atmospheric emission of industrial oil and extensive maritime traffic. PAH contamination is generally much more pyrolytic than petrogenic. This study helped to determine the concentration, spatial distribution, compound profiles and possible sources of various petroleum compounds, thus contributing significantly to a greater understanding of the background of petroleum hydrocarbon levels, the various types of anthropogenic input involved in terms of hydrocarbon pollution.
