Removal of Gaseous SO2 and NO with Ferrate Wet-oxidation Technique

Ferrate(VI) (FeVIO4 2-, Fe(VI)) has gained much attention as an environmentally friendly oxidant due to many advantageous properties such as higher reactivity and selectivity over traditional oxidant alternatives, while the wet oxidation method is also one of the most effective advanced methods for controlling acid gases. A novel Fe(VI) wet-oxidation process was developed in this paper to explore the potential application for simultaneous removal NO and SO2. The stoichiometric experiments of SO2 or NO oxidation with Fe(VI) were conducted in a wet-oxidation column, while Fe(VI) in aqueous solution were controlled at pH 9.0. The result showed that stoichiometric molar ratio for SO2 oxidation with Fe(VI) was determined to be nearly 3.0 and the ratio for NO was also about 3.0. Moreover, sulfate and nitrate was identified as final product by ion chromatography from the reaction and buffer can ensure oxidation activity of Fe(VI). The experiments for simultaneous removal of multiple gas pollutants with the continuous ferrate feeding in lab-scale were investigated from the view of industrial application. It was found that the simultaneous removal efficiency of SO2 and NO was enhanced with the increase of Fe(VI) concentration, 100% SO2 removal efficiency and 90% NO removal efficiency were achieved by Fe(VI) wet-oxidation process at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. The results demonstrate that Fe(VI) could be an effective wet-oxidation agent for the simultaneous removal of NO and SO2.
