New Approach to Simultaneous Removal of SO2 and NOx: Use of Keggin Heteropoly Compounds Addenda

Using the aqueous solution of heteropoly compounds(HPC), including Na9PW5Mo4O34, H3PW6Mo6O40, H3PWMo11O40, H4PVMo11O40 and H5PV2Mo10O40, a new liquid redox method for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx from gas stream was developed. This method, taking HPC solution as medium for electron transfer, enables in nature the redox reaction between SO2 and NOx under ambient conditions. Conversions to SO2 and NOx can reach upto 95% and 76% respectively. In this study, all the HPCs used were evaluated and the performance of a typical HPC prepared was further optimized by the addition of NaCl, NH4VO3 and MnSO4. Moreover, it was found that absorbent system formed by same HPC with different oxidation state, i.e. HPC(ox)+HPC(re), possesses better performance of combined removal of SO2 and NOx than HPC(ox) only. Factors affecting the performance of HPC were investigated, including absorption temperature, absorbent concentration, the use of buffer agent and the presence of O2 in the feed gas. The optimum conditions for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx were recommended.
