On-Line TRS Analyzer-Based Evaluation of Efficiencies of Four Commercial Odor-Reducing Agents in Controlling Odors from Sewer

In this study, the efficiencies of four commercially available odor reducing agents were evaluated by analyzing the odor concentration before and after spraying each of them inside sewer pipes at four different sites in Seoul, Korea. Especially, an on-line total reduced sulfur (TRS) analyzer was installed at each site to monitor volatile sulfur compounds emission trends, along with intermittent gas collection and instrumental analysis. Odors and individual odorants (NH3, H2S, CH3SH, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide)of the collected gas samples were analyzed using the olfactory method and using instrumental analyzers, respectively. The effect of the odor reducing agents on the water quality of the wastewater was also evaluated by measuring water temperature, pH, BOD, SS, and NH4+. In general, the test odor-reducing agents were not effective and could not reduce odor emission from the sewer lines; the results both from instrumental analysis and the operation of the on-line TRS analyzer showed no difference in odor characteristics before and after the addition of the deodorants. Also, the results from the analysis of wastewater characteristics before and after the treatment of reducing agentsdid not show significant in water quality of four study sites.
