Development of Remediation Technologies for TCE Contaminated Groundwater in Industrial Complex of Korea

Groundwater contamination by chlorinated solvents including TCE, is wide spread in industrial areas of Korea. Thus, the Korean Ministry of Environment launched a five-year (2009-2014) research group (a part of GAIA Project) dedicated for developing site characterization and remediation technologies of DNAPL (Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) contaminated aquifers in the industrial sites. The groundwater research group named SEEDS (Smart, Environmentally friendly, Energy effective, DNAPL remediation System) consists of 4 teams: (1) SICO team (Site and Contaminant characterization team), (2) EAPL team (Enhanced Attenuation and Plume capture team), (3) ENHO team (Energy-effective Hot zone remediation team) and (4) DIPL team (Dispersed plume remediation team). Each team is closely related to other teams by exchanging ideas and information, sharing materials and doing field tests together. All the teams under SEEDS officially will work together during the research period. As a demonstration site of this research, the Woosan industrial complex in Wonju city, Korea was chosen and groundwater in the site has been severely contaminated with TCE far exceeding the Korean groundwater standard (0.03 mg/L) since 1995. One of main sources of TCE was an asphalt testing laboratory where waste TCE was inappropriately dumped in ground and there were other many potential sources in the site including a molding company where TCE was used for a solvent. Most of groundwater wells for domestic and industrial usages were abandoned due to the TCE contamination. However, a dispute over source apportionment and allocation of the remediation cost has delayed actual groundwater remediation. Under the unresolved dispute, the Korean Ministry of Environment initiated the research project with a expectation of some TCE removal during the remediation technology demonstration. This study provides overview of the SEEDS groundwater research group and some details of the groundwater contamination in the demonstration site.
