Lead Distribution in Sediments of the Shaxi River

For the surficial sediments sampled from the Shaxi River in Sanming, Fujian Province, China, the distribution and fraction of heavy metal lead in surficial sediments were investigated. The microwave digestion result showed that the concentration of lead in surficial sediments ranged from 66 mg·kg-1 to 395 mg·kg-1. The results of modified BCR sequential extraction procedure showed that heavy metal lead in the surficial sediment was mainly associated with reducible and residual fractions. The fractions of Pb sampled near the drain were in the order of reducible>residual>oxidizable>acid soluble >> water soluble fraction, and in the order of residual>reducible>oxidizable>acid soluble >> water soluble fraction in samples away from the drain. The results indicated that the concentration and fraction of pollutant lead were significantly correlative to the drain of some iron and steel factory around Shaxi River, which reduced obviously with the downstream distance increasing to the drain. The reducible fraction decreased with the downstream distance increasing to the drain of iron and steel factory, however, the oxidizable and residual fractions increased with the distance increasing.
