Effects of Biocides on Biofilm at Different Substrate Levels

With the reducing of water resources, using advanced treated refinery wastewater as recirculating cooling water is an effective method to save water and to reduce the pollution of petroleum and petrochemical industry. However, the control of biofilm is a bottleneck in the application of this technology. To resolve the problem of biofilm breeding, antimicrobial characteristics of chlorine dioxide and quaternary ammonium biocide on biofilm at different substrate levels were investigated. Biofilm detachment ratio and TTC-dehydrogenase activity (DHA) were two indexes to discuss the antimicrobial effects. The results showed that the higher the substrate levels resulted in the higher biofilm detachment ratios at the same biocides concentrations. As far as the biofilm detachment ratio is concerned, the antimicrobial effect of quaternary ammonium biocide is superior to chlorine dioxide. Under the action of biocides, DHA of biofilm decreases rapidly, particularly in the first 30 minutes, and then it tends to be zero with time under three different nutrient conditions.
