Preparation of ZnFe2O4 by Hydrothermal Method and its Application for Wastewater Treatment

High purity zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanoparticles with a narrow band gap were synthesized via hydrothermal method in the presence of CTAB and characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and DRS. The experimental results showed that as-prepared ZnFe2O4 powder with a size of 20-30 nm has the photo-sensitivity in the visible light region with a bandgap of 1.92 eV calculated from the plot of the transformed Kubelka-Munch function versus the energy of light. In addition, the degradation efficiency of AOII in aqueous solution using as-prepared ZnFe2O4 samples under visible light irradiation (λ>400 nm) was investigated. It was observed that only 42% AOII can be degraded in the absence of H2O2 in ZnFe2O4 suspension under visible light irradiation within 120 min. However, the degradation efficiency could reach more than 98% AOII under visible light irradiation after adding 12 mM H2O2 into ZnFe2O4 suspension. These investigations here demonstrated that ZnFe2O4 exhibits a higher photocatalytic activity with the addition of H2O2 under visible light irradiation and concluded that H2O2-assisted ZnFe2O4 system could be a cost-effective photo-oxidation system for water and wastewater treatment.
