Hydrogen Peroxide-assisted UV Photodegradation of Atrazine in Aqueous Solution

Aqueous solutions of Atrazine(ATZ, 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1, 3, 5-triazine) were photolyzed (λ=254 nm) under a variety of solution conditions. The initial concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ATZ varied from 0 to 200 mg/L and 34 to 151 μg/L respectively. The most favorable reaction conditions appear to be a moderate concentration of H2O2 from 100 mg/L to 120 mg/L. 90% of ATZ is destroyed in 1 hour under these conditions. In this study, UV/H2O2 treatment of ATZ yielded several organic byproducts which were identified, including DIA, DEA, OHDIA, OHDEA, DAA and OAAT. They were quantified over the range of treatment tested and the combined byproduct information led to a proposed ATZ degradation scheme.
