Water Retention Characteristics and Simulation of Soils in the Presence of Bi-mixed Surfactants

Mixed surfactants were extensively found in soils due to the use of different surfactants in domestic, agricultural, and industrial products. In this study, the experiment and simulation about Shanghai-soil water retention (S-SWR) characteristics have been conducted in the presence of bi-mixed surfactants. The results showed that the S-SWR characteristics were significantly influenced in the presence of bi-mixed surfactants. With increasing bi-mixed surfactant concentrations, the S-SWR content decreased below the critical micelle concentration of bi-mixed surfactants and tended to increase above the critical micelle concentration. An overestimate of the S-SWR content was observed when van Genuchten model obtained in free surfactants was applied to simulate the S-SWR content in the presence of bi-mixed surfactants. Karagunduz model and Smith model, which considered the effect of surfactants and based on the van Genuchten model, may better simulate the S-SWR characteristics in the presence of bi-mixed surfactants.
