From Bulk Tipping to Zero Waste in Emerging Economies:Staging the Critical Road Signs

This research experimented with source-separation of domestic waste. The result was a two-step sorted-waste composition report that defined the present landfill diversion potential as 67%. This is a reliable number and is typical for emerging economies. It is proposed to municipal administrations as support for providing realistic targets of landfill diversion in their waste management schemes. The research then projected the target into the future with the expectation of eliminating the landfill through the gradual progression of diversion. The rate of necessary incremental yearly landfill diversion was established from the 2003 situation in a sample town and the demand of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development relative to sanitation services. A graphical representation of the collection and diversion targets was developed that shows the critical road signs as follows: starting situation in 2003, collection coverage in 2015 as required by the Summit directive, complete collection coverage reached in 2027 with bulk tipping, diversion of 67% of waste by 2039 and zero landfilling by 2050.
