Waste Management – Reuse in Agriculture?

The aim of our study was to give results about some effects of some sewage sludge (SS) and sewage sludge compost (SSC) on the physiological parameters of maize (Zea mays L cvs. Norma S). These materials contain plenty of useful elements e.g. Fe, K, Mg, P, Zn. Larger concentration of K, Mg, P and Zn were measured in SSC than in SS. Sewage sludge has an advantageous effect on dry matter accumulation of roots and shoots, while SSC has an advantageous effect on dry matter accumulation on shoots. SSC increased the relative chlorophyll contents in the 2nd and 3rd leaves of maize on the 6th day. SS increased the value on the 3rd leaves on the 6th and 11th days. The effect of sterilized sewage sludge was also examined on the plant growth. The plant growth, dry matter accumulation of shoots and roots are reduced when sterilized sewage sludge was applied due to microbial deprivation. The relative chlorophyll and absolute chlorophyll a, b and carotene contents were higher when sterilized sewage sludge was examined. So, the sewage sludge contains lots of useful microorganism and elements which we can use for sustainable agriculture.
