Biodegradation of Furfural with Aerobic Granular Sludge
China is the most important furfural production and export country, however, with the benefits from furfural production and export; it also brings about serious environmental pollution problems during the furfural production process. In a self-made activated sludge sequencing batch reactor (SBR), the conditions of aerobic granular sludge formation and its furfural degradation capacity were researched. The results shown: aerobic granular sludge of furfural degradation can be cultivated successfully with the flocculent ordinary as seed sludge, and furfural, sodium acetate as the influent carbon source. By controlling the sludge load, run cycles, settling time and other operating conditions, the particle size of granular sludge can be reached from 0.3 to 0.8mm, with regular and clearly outline and furfural degradation ability; the average settling velocity, SVI, sludge density and MLSS was 27m/h, 43.26mL/g, 1.022g/cm3, 11.36g/L, respectively. When at the middle and late culture stage, the removal rate of COD and furfural degradation rate were more than 97% and 93%, respectively. When furfural was the only influent carbon source, the granular sludge could obtain good result in a concentration below 1600mg/L.
