Water Use and Water-Use Efficiency of Isabgol and French Psyllium in Drought Stress Condition

In order to investigate the response of two species of Isabgol (Plantago ovata) and French psyllium (P. psyllium) in different water availability and plant density, two RCBD designs with factorial arrangement of different plant density and irrigation regimes and species were conducted at the agriculture research field, Tehran University, Karaj, in April 2005 and 2006. The treatments were three levels of plant density (low, medium and high density), three water stress levels (severe stress, medium stress and control) and two plantago species. Combined analysis results showed that year effect was significant and water stress significantly decreased seed yield, biological yield, plant water use and mucilage yield per hectare and significantly increased mucilage percentage and swelling seed yield. The highest biological yield appeared in control and medium stress in medium density and the highest mucilage percentage was observed in severe stress and low density. Generally, seed yield, biological yield and mucilage yield per hectare were higher in Isabgol compared to French psyllium. Seed water use efficiency in Isabgol was more than French psyllium, however biological water use efficiency was more in French psyllium.
