“The Photosynthesis in Dominant Species Hypothesis of Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom (CHAB) Formation
Elucidation of CHAB-formation causes may become the basis to bring CHABs under control. Since 2007, we have investigated the Lake Chaohu: identifying phytoplankton species, observing seasonal variation of dominant species, measuring primary productivity, detecting a lot of liminological parameters, finding “leading factors, and assaying eco-physiological photosynthesis in dominant species. Meantime the literatures were consulted and the occurrence history of CHABs in the Lake Chaohu was analyzed. These studies showed that earlier than 100 years ago CHABs in the Lake Chaohu were recorded, which occurred and developed for almost whole year. The compositions of the bloom phytoplankton in different seasons were variable, and dominant cyanobacteria occupied more than 70% of total cells. The dominant species from 2007-2009 included Microcystis viridis (in April, May, June, October, November and December); M.wesenbergii (in July and August); M.aeruginosa (in September) and Anabaena flos-aquae (in January, February and March). Up to now there is no appropriate explication on the causes for these Microcystis bloom.
