Effect of Chlorine and Permanganate Oxidation on Microcystis Cell Integrity in Water
Pre-treatment using oxidants such as chlorine and permanganate, is employed in many instances for improving algae removal during water treatment processes. However, a few drawbacks may be involved in the oxidation processes, such as lysis of cyanobacterial cells and release of odorants and/or toxins. The effects of chlorine and permanganate on the cell integrity of microcystis were examined in this study. Photos from a scanning electron microscope revealed that Microcystis cell surfaces were deformed after chlorine and permanganate oxidation in the time scale of minutes.
